Guerrilla Lighting Seminar scheduled as a Master Class at WPPI 2010

June 26th, 2009

Most of everyone who are familiar with my photography background know that I was a photojournalist specialized in sports photography.  In my past life as a photojournalist, I have photographed some of the largest events in So Cal.  Events such as The Rose Bowl, USC vs. UCLA football, Lakers, Dodgers and Angeles.  I was fortunately enough to have had over 200 photos published in magazines and newspapers across the US and a few foreign countries.

As a sports photographer, I have taught sports photography seminars for numerous of years at several large national photographer’s conventions in the early to mid 2000’s.

I made a transition in 2005 to start shooting wedding and portraits and have been apply to teach non-sports seminars at these conventions ever since.  I was delighted obtained my first wedding and lighting teaching opportunity in 2006 and have taught several more seminars since.  However, prestigious and elusive WPPI (Wedding and Portrait Photographers International), always politely declined my teaching requests in the past three years.  Until NOW!

I just received news that WPPI 2010  have scheduled me to  teach a 2-hour Master Class on Guerrilla Lighting.  I am both excited and humbled by this great opportunity.  Thank you WPPI!

I want also to thank my sponsors: Westcott, Pictobooks, Vision Arts Book, Mac Group, Portercase, Hoodman, Bay Photo Lab, SKB Cases, Lowepro, Honl Photo and Kwik-Stand for their generous support of my seminars. For more information on all the seminars I taught over the years, please click HERE.

Three of my Photos were published in a book for Professional Wedding Photographers

February 8th, 2009

I was very happy to receive two complimentary copies of a new book, 100 Techniques for Professional Wedding Photographers.  Because three of my photos from 2006 were published in this book, therefore the publisher was kind enough to send me two copies.

I was very honored that my name was listed next to so many world-renowned wedding photographers that have also contributed photos to this book.  Thank you Bill Hurter, the author of this wonderful book for selecting my photos to be published.

Guerrilla Lighting Workshop

February 7th, 2009

Why did I name my lighting workshop Guerrilla Lighting Workshop? The first word “Guerrilla” is referring to guerrilla warfare where it is unconventional and extremely mobile.

Guerrilla Lighting is best describe as the creation of professional studio-like lighting that is mobile so it can be deployed on location. It is a lighting system consists of battery-powered lights range from speedlites, Quantum lights to Alien Bee, Kwik Stands and Westcott Apollo softboxes.

If you wish to see some behind-the-scene Guerrilla Lighting setups, please click HERE.

Here are some comments from past attendees:

To Whom It May Concern:

This correspondence is a recommendation for programming presented by Mr. Ben Chen. Michigan Triangle Professional Photographers Association hosted Mr. Chen for two programs on 8 April, 2008. Both presentations were well received by our membership. He shows good command of his subject matter and presents in a very up beat manner.
As a former educator, I can say with confidence that Ben is well prepared, confident and maintains the interest of the attendees. He is a welcome addition to the speaking tour.

Sincerely,
Dale L. Barber CPP

• Hi Ben,

I’m glad to take your lighting class. After taking the class, I was able to understand what I’m reading in magazine article and books related to lighting. My primary photographer told me my photos has improved a lot after I took the class. Huot Kaing

• Hi Ben,
Thanks for the workshop yesterday. It was a lot of new information for me, as I’ve been doing available light/street photography up until now, but I’m committed to learning. You were really patient with my skill level and your attitude during the shoot was as educational as the technique you showed us.

I’m going to immediately buy my first stand, speed light, battery, umbrella, pocket wizard, and whatever else I need for handy, lightweight, interior portrait and profile sessions. Regards, Oliver Harrison

• Ben,
Just wanted to say thanks for a wonderful last Sunday. I learned a tremendous amount from your class. I applied what you taught to some work I was doing yesterday and I think the results look great. I was using a single SB800 strobe shooting through the umbrella, side lighting, with a quantum battery. I exposed for the background then illuminated the subject with the strobe. Below is the link to the photos, the gallery is called “onion at sunset”. I also shot the “M&M Portraits” yesterday as well.

All the best,

• My name is Andy Amacher, I am a local photographer located in the Inland Empire.  About one year ago I attended Ben’s workshops on Guerrilla Lighting.

Before attending Ben’s workshops I felt I knew everything there was to know about photography – well I was wrong. What I learned in one afternoon changed my thinking about photography and improved my photography. I was so impressed I even volunteered to help with his seminars. Don’t fool yourself, if you want to excel in photography you need to work with the BEST.

2009-06-23 Candy-Encore Cover Girl Shoot

June 23rd, 2009

Candy is a lovely 13-year-old young dancer.  She won Encore Cover Girl’s national contest in 2008 and as part of her prize package, she won a half-day photo shoot with me in Southern California.  However, due to Candy and her mom’s busy schedule, they have not had a chance to come down to So Cal for Candy’s photo shoot.

In June 2009, we met up again in Lake Tahoe for the 2009 Encore Showcase Nationals.  We had a brief few hours windows on Wednesday to conduct sunset shoot.  Here are some of my favorite images.  I want to thank my assistants Jimmy and Bill for their help in lighting.

2009-06-23 Encore Nationals Dance Competition

June 22nd, 2009

For the 7th year, I had the pleasure photograph whole bunch of graceful and elegant dancers at the Encore Showcase Nationals Competition at Lake Tahoe during the week of June 22nd.

As many of my viewers already know, I absolutely love to photograph dancers.  As students of body movement, dancers are keenly aware their graceful poses and body positions.  Here are some of my favorite images from the competition.
