Los Angeles Photography Class

Ben offers Los Angeles photography class for local photographers on the following subjects:

  • Guerrilla Lighting Workshop- After years of experimenting with all types of lighting gear, Ben has discovered a collection of products that meet his strict requirements for being portable, lightweight, powerful and effective.  Ben shows attendees how he lights when he has an assistant at hand, and what the set up may look like when shooting alone.  In either situation, he shows his students how they can create effective portrait lighting using a small array of portable, off-camera lighting equipment.

  • Guerrilla Speed Light Workshop- Guerrilla Speedlight Workshop is a brand new 8-hour workshop that covers “On” and “Off” Camera lighting with speedlights. We will be exploring various TTL and manual settings as well as various light modifiers including several new “Beauty Dishes” for speedlights. Model and model releases will be provided. The workshop will ends with a “City Lights” night shoot.

  • Fast-Track into Wedding Photography Seminar - This seminar is designed as a “fast-track” course to help new wedding photographers - and experienced photographers from other fields who are new to weddings - succeed in the shortest amount of time possible.

  • Mastering your DSLR Seminar - this is one of Ben's newer class. This class is the first part of "Novice Photography Boot Camp" that will teach a new photographer how to “unlock” the potential of their DSLR and take better photos. Topics to be covered include:
    • Why DSLR?
    • Tired shooting in Auto or Program mode? Let's start "control" your DSLR and shooting it in Manual Mode.
    • Lens Choice
    • Mega Pixel Myth
    • Recording Media
    • Basic Flash Photography
    • Basic Exposure Control
    • Various Shooting Modes (How to Shoot in "Other" then Auto Mode)
    • Simple Digital Workflow
    • and much more

  • How to Take Better Photos Seminar - This class is the second part of "Novice Photography Boot Camp". It is about how to vastly improve students' photography. Topics to be covered include:
    • Working with the Subject
    • Elicit Expressions
    • Simple Poses
    • Select your Background
    • Photo Composition
    • Depth of Field
    • Basic Lighting
    • Simple Post-Production
    • and much more

  • How to Capture Killer Sports Images (currently not scheduled) - First, students in this course will learn what types of images are considered “Killer Sports Images” and what the several “must-have” elements are that make these photos maximally effective.  Once the students recognize what makes a “Killer Sports Image”, Ben can teach them “How, When and Where” to capture these kinds of spectacular photos in several major sports.  He will discuss the different techniques necessary to get the perfect shot, including timing choices (specifically, when to shoot 8 fps and when to shoot one image at the time), what type of camera equipment is ideal for the work, and the proper camera settings necessary to capture different types of shots. Topics such as “Peak of Action” vs. “Emotional Expression” will be discussed in depth.  And Ben will even share with his students the “secret” of obtaining photo credentials for major sporting events! That’s worth the price of the whole seminar right there!

  • The Business of Youth Sports Photography (currently not scheduled) - This is an introductory course for photographers interested in the youth sports action photography market.  The course will cover a range of topics including how to get started, which sports to shoot, the types of products offered, recruiting a dedicated staff, how to avoid shooting on spec, what types of services to offer, building a solid marketing plan, and lastly, how to be profitable. After all, isn’t that the reason for starting a business?

  • How to Shoot "Big Four" Sports Photography Seminar (currently not scheduled) is an information jam-packed seminar that teaches you how to shoot the big four sports in US. The "Big Four" sports are Football, Basketball, Baseball and Soccer. Ben will cover a "When To", "Where To", "What To" shoot each sports. Also include "recommended" equipment for each sport.

Ben's Seminars at Conventions and Professional Photography Organizations

Seminars at Professional Photographer’s Conventions

Ben has been teaching seminars at various professional photographers’ conventions (Imaging USA, WPPI, MacWorld, Photo Marketing Association (PMA), Pro Photo Expo (Professional Photographer of California), MTPPA (Michigan Triangle Professional Photographer Association), POMA (Professional Outdoor Media Association) for the past 5 years.

In the beginning, he was asked only to draw on his expertise as a professional sports photographer.  In 2006, Ben has switched from sports to wedding and portrait photography. In 2008, he caught the attention of several professional photographer’s organizations due to his rather fast and successful transition into those fields. He was asked to present two seminars (wedding and lighting) for the Michigan Triangle Professional Photographers Association.

More and more, Ben is being asked to speak and teach on wedding and lighting topics. Most recently Ben has been asked to present his Guerrilla Lighting techniques as Master Class at WPPI in 2010. Also in 2010, Ben will be speaking at the Imaging USA in Nashville, TN and in Anaheim at the PMA. In 2009 Ben presented "Fast-Track into Wedding Photography" seminar at the Professional Photographers of California convention.

Ben want also to thank his sponsors: Pictobooks, Vision Arts Book, Mac Group, Portercase, Hoodman, Bay Photo Lab, Lowepro, Honl Photo and Expoimaging for their generous support of his seminars. For more information on all the seminars he has taught over the years, please click HERE.
